Prayers for our great Elders-10/3/2013

March 13, 2013

JIDO celebrated  a remembrance service for our elders who passed away recently specifically Tiberio Okeny, DD Nokrach,  Sr Apolonia Lamunu, PP Opok, Lord Andrew Adimola and Steven Okech.

The day was dedicated to reflecting, recognising and remembering the hard work of these great elders.  They immensely contributed in building our society in their different areas of work.   The day was very successful and many community members attended to pay their respect including representative from Uganda Martyrs, Daniel Comboni and the Westnile Community.

Key community leaders gave resounding speeches and dedication to our departed great elders.

Deacon Rv Dr Alfred-Joseph Banya gave a touching homily that reflected the readings and the theme of the day.  He urged us all to always do the right thing in our community and make a difference like our elders did.

Dr Obonyo thanked JIDO for celebrating this great day and he gave a general reflection about our elders. He narrated that our key elders negotiated and brought a lot of development in Acoli Land-he quoted-” Okeny was the first Ugandan to become a labour officer in the 1950s.  Lord Andrew Adimola purchased the Uganda Embassy in London during his tenure in the UK as the  Ambassador”.

Quotes from various community members

Bonny Okot “our great elders left a legacy too tall for us to emulate”

Princess Dorothy “urged all community members to fill the gaps that our elders left”

Christine Lamaro-Acoli Association Chair “DD Nokorac was the first chair of Acoli Association, he inspired me to become chair.  They are powerful people who give us inspiration”

John Obalim “Atwoma was no ordinary leader. He played a key role in Ugandan politics and he left a legacy for us all to follow”

Registered members of JIDO were confirmed in Church, cited their vows and allegiances to the Blessed Martyrs cause.

The success of the day is summarised by the photos below.
